“If you ask ten people the question of, “How often should I sharpen my chainsaw?” you’re likely to get ten different answers. But there is one basic rule of thumb that will indicate when it’s time to sharpen your chain: If you have to apply pressure, it’s time for a touch-up.
Most of the advice you’ll hear is based on arbitrary factors that only apply to certain cutting situations. For example, sharpening a chain for every other tank of fuel, or after you’ve felled 4 trees. But that leaves so many other variables to chance. How hard is the wood? Are you doing crosscuts or ripping? How large are the trees you are cutting? The wear and tear on a chain varies widely based on these factors.”
